Which tools and equipment do you need to carry out the works in a safe manner?

You can install most of the removable and reusable insulation covers manually. Very often there is no need for extra tools or equipment. However, there might be some areas with more difficult access. There, you should consider if you can use temporary access or mechanical ways. It all depends on the overall site progress and work areas. Usually, you will be working off the permanent platforms. But in some cases you will need other means of access. These may include scaffolds, podium steps, mobile elevated working platforms, ramps, cranes or other plant and equipment.

Before you jump in to such equipment, make sure it is safe to use it. How can you check it? You can make sure that trained scaffolders built the scaffold and that mobile plant went through the regular inspections. Also, if you use any plant you need to be competent and have valid ticket to operate it.

Sewing machines can also be used for local adjustments and modifications

When we take on the order we always try to fabricate all removable and reusable insulation covers in our factory. However, sometimes with very complicated pieces for insulation, for example turbines, we need to do some minor modifications on site. These adjustment may require using sewing machines. When you use it on site make sure you consult it with the health and safety management. It is not practical and sometimes unsafe to use personal protective equipment like safety helmets or safety gloves when sewing. Therefore, you can, for example, position sewing machine in a sea container. Another solution would be to agree with the client an exclusion zone or a separate room where your team does this type of work.

As already mentioned in the above paragraph, for some complicated items for insulation we may need additional machines. Before we insulate gas or steam turbines with removable insulation mats we need to install fixing pins. In order to fix these pins in efficient way we use a stud welding machine.

What are overall safety aspects of using stud welding machines? First of all the personnel operating this equipment has to be properly qualified. Some clients asked us for on site skills tests as well. Secondly, we ensure that the equipment we use is in safe condition. That is why we prefer to hire this equipment as the hiring supplier carries out necessary maintenance checks on regular basis.

Some stud welding machines require three phase electrical connection. Therefore, it is important to check for such provisions on site. From safety perspective it is also crucial to make sure that hot works permit is in place. Usually the permit officer issues them on daily basis. Hot works permit included details of the hot works and references to safety precautions. As minimum you would normally need to provide fire extinguishers, welding blankets and welding screens for areas where you use stud welding machine. We would also recommend using suitable PPE for the welder. This may be welding goggles, fire retardant jacket and welding gloves.

Supervisor responsibilities during installation of removable and reusable insulation covers

Supervisor’s role is to monitor the installation of flexible insulation covers on a daily basis. Whether these are valve insulation jackets or acoustic insulation pads for suspended ceilings, there is always specific risk assessment to be done. This means looking after safety aspects as well. Supervisor should carry out point of work risk assessment and check if the work area is safe for work. Additionally, it is supervisors task to make sure the site operatives have suitable tools and equipment for installation of removable insulation jackets.
